Bridges and Viaducts
Bridges and Viaducts provide essential links for both road and rail transport throughout the European Union and to its neighbours. Being of concrete, steel and masonry construction these structures are subject to deterioration from corrosion that can require costly and disruptive repair strategies in order to maintain their structural integrity.

The provision of an effective waterproof layer applied to the structural deck is necessary to prevent deterioration caused by the ingress of water and chlorides, thus avoiding unnecessary repairs. Liquid applied proprietary coating systems have been developed especially for this purpose and have been widely used since the 1980’s.

Such systems are manufactured using modern synthetic resin materials such as Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) or Polyurethanes (PU) and are spray applied to provide seamless tailored membranes that have no vulnerable joints and can accommodate complex detailing, such as that around drainage outlets, as well as coping with uneven concrete deck finishes.

To be an effective Bridge Deck Waterproofing System not only must the system provide the benefits offered by all liquid applied waterproofing systems but also:

  • Provide a strong bond to the substrate sufficient to resist the strong shear forces experienced during the surfacing operation.
  • Incorporate heat activated bond coats that are designed to provide adhesion to the surfacing sufficient to resist vehicle braking forces.
  • Be resistant to the high temperature experienced during the laying of asphalt pavement road surfacing.
  • Be quick to apply and cure for successful completion of short or overnight possession work.
  • Be applied in the widest range of climatic conditions.
  • Be tough enough to withstand potential site damage including from paving equipment and receive ballast directly onto the membrane.
All these extra requirements must be met without compromising on quality or long term performance.

ELWA members lead the field in the provision of these tailored products and can offer technical expertise and design solutions and will be pleased to assist with any enquiries.
